 smart programming: inteRAD's build-IT

smart code management: visual bi-directional programming

"Quality software is achieved at a cost that is not proportional to the size of the problem"
Charles Simonyi, Intentional Software, as quoted in "Unplugged: Simonyi creates Software Intentionally, by Dan Farber, Feb 5,2004.

The I.T. industry has always been based on the writing of complex computer code in a variety of "languages", requiring highly technically skilled programmers to build applications. This complexity implies high levels of risk and excessive cost in software development and maintenance.

build-IT removes this complexity, by enabling software to be developed and displayed as a sequence of graphics, icons, and plain English text, rather than millions of lines of code.

Insted of editing terse code, users are able to drag and drop graphical icons into logic diagrams.

Presenting a choice of graphical and code views, which remain perfectly synchronized throughout the entire software lifecycle, regardless of whether visual or code views are edited, bridges the communication gap betweeen project stakeholders.  This delivers cost reductions in both development and maintenance, and reduces the risk of software project outcomes which do not match user specifications.

Enabling development using drag and drop visual techniques, build-IT provides a language independent interface that adapts to the user's preferred work style. Facilitating improved communication between programmers and non-technical stakeholders, it promises redyced project risk and applications which more accurately match requirement specifications.

smart code management: visual bi-directional programming technology

"Bi-directional visual programming technology" is the official description used in Patent Application PCT/AU/00937 -- now passed international examination stage -- for the core technology underpinning most of inteRAD's software innovations.

This complex term refers to a method of reducing the complexity that implies high levels of risk in software engineering.

Put simply, inteRAD's investion, with just a click of a button, transforms this:

to this:

During the entire software development process, all views are always available and always in perfect synchronization. At any point in a project, non-technical stakeholders can ask to see a graphical view which they can readily understand.

The implications of this technology are exciting. Traditionally, the major cost in software maintenance and upgrade work has been in achieving familiarity with the existing code -- particularly if the original programmer is no longer available to work on the project. The capacity to instantly produce a visual diagram of even the largest and most complex application removes this cost. This slashes total expenditure requirements and enables more frequent upgrades to meet the requirement for business agility.

To fully understand the importance of this invention, consider the "Year 2000 problem", and the billions of dollars expended on detecting and correcting date calculation code in software used by major corporations and Governments.

Had inteRAD's technology -- or similar -- been available at that time, managers would have been able to see for themselves whether or not a problem existed with their systems. Location and correcting the problem would have been achievable at a fraction of the cost.
